The luxury hotel market in Bangkok keeps up a pretty brisk pace with new openings, renovations and the like, but one hotel stands out in our estimation for its Thai classic old-world charm and grace, while also moving with the times. The legendary Sukhothai Bangkok offers you the experience of timeless Thai elegance. mylifestylenews writes.
The Sukhothai Bangkok stands as one of the classic, but pre-eminent hotels in Bangkok known for its understated luxury and stunning classic architecture, which is a breath of fresh air when you consider how many hotels are being knocked down to rebuild or renovated without keeping any old-world charm.
This elegant luxury hotel sits on a large lush estate in one of the busiest precincts near Lumpini Park, bustling Sathorn Road and a short walking distance to the newly opened One Siam, being one of the most sought after shopping malls/precincts to the city, yet you would not know you are in a city, as the architecture of this property transforms your stay by offering an oasis of calm and almost zen-like ambience with secluded corners to explore, thanks to the expansive lawns, reflecting ponds, sculptures and incredible contemporary modern Thai architecture.
Being one of the oldest hotels on Sathorn Road, the legendary Sukhothai Bangkok also had an eye for the future and with the abundance of space, have built a new wing some years back along with a very large swimming pool deck, not to mention the expanded spa pavilion and now called The Sukhothai Spa that has added some additional treatment options, which will have spa aficionados quivering with excitement.
The Sukhothai Bangkok is easily accessible by major Bangkok BTS and metro lines that is a joy to travel to a destination that is without much hassle, as we all know how Bangkok traffic is like. If you choose to arrive in style, the hotel designated chauffeur service is there at your disposal.
It has been more than six years since we last stayed and it is clear that it has not lost its charm or foresightedness! We love the long driveway that leads you into the immaculate grounds that makes your arrival experience special, even just a slow stroll in the morning or late evening to enjoy the lush and shaded “zen-mosphere” of its surrounding.
Upon receiving the warm Thai greetings by the doorman who is dressed in traditional neat and smart Chut Thai in chong kraben pants, a Raj pattern shirt and knee-length white socks and a sabai, ushering you into the grandeur of the foyer.
The interior and the vaulted ceiling architecture of the lobby has everything rooted in Thai pagodas, which is referenced in so many areas as you perambulate around the property.
Additionally, some pretty posh upgraded and refreshed public areas and rooms with new carpets and paint, so there seems to be more to come.
We were quickly checked into our Executive Suite which spans 76sqm with new carpets and upholstery on the furniture, including some rich Thai silks drapes and full teakwood flooring as well as a flat-screen television that revolves from a plinth in the middle of the room, which is a great space saver and so effective in design, yet the essence of the rooms remains and is still to be admired.
The open plan suites with floor to ceiling windows allows you to have the vantage views of the infamous courtyard garden (which is one of the highlights to have the room booked facing the enchanted garden) and the city beyond. The moment you glance out of the window to the reflecting ponds and lawns, your whole body seems to sigh with relief as everything about it is a tonic for your body to rejuvenate and completely forget about the cares of the world.
The bathrooms are equally spacious with well equipped bath tub and separate walk-in shower as well as a electronic bidet. The bath amenities are perfect for the brand touchpoint, local premium brand Pañpuri are supplied in no time and you will get used to that graceful rice jasmine scent immediately.
The large king size bed is well made and covered in soft sheer cotton, pillows and bedding are heavenly, dim lighting with touch button controls makes life less complicated where new technology is to apply in this modern world of living. So, a deep sleep is guaranteed based on our experience and we know we have arrived at the right hotel.
Our Executive Suite came with access to the Club Lounge on a separate building which is a new addition and this takes up the entire 6th floor with views overlooking the gigantic pool terrace and beyond of the new vista of the city skyline, what a splendid location and repast it offers.
The Club Lounge has all the usual touches you would expect, with breakfast, refreshments throughout the day, afternoon tea from 3pm-4pm and a two and a half cocktail hours service period in the evenings with The Sukhothai own branded wines from France and South Africa which were a pleasant surprise exclusive touch and quite memorable.
We were looked after by Khun Stang, the Club Lounge butler, throughout our whole stay and his service is to be commended of his vast knowledge about all the news, current trends and events opening in Bangkok, it was clear that he was a font of knowledge and hadn’t missed out on any detail despite only less than a week on board for his new role, so an absolute plus and great asset for the hotel.

Another added must-do experience is the newly expanded The Sukhothai Spa and we must say that this truly exceeded our expectations, beware of WOW factors that inspire. The newly renovated pavilion is a sight to behold and explore with a bespoke health and wellness experience.
The entrance courtyard is so beautiful and inviting, once you enter the reception it just keeps on going with so much space and serenity coming out of its pores. You simply cannot walk out without pampering yourself in one of their many crafted signature spa treatments.
The new luxurious Hammam is considered one of most sophisticated facilities and amenities offered in Bangkok that you surely do not want to miss out.
Daily Yoga sessions are also available inside the majestic pavilion with a private coach, overlooking the serene lawn on a semi open graceful pergola deck.
The new and spacious Fitness Studio.
Food and beverage is another strength at The Sukhothai Bangkok that cannot be missed. The all day dining, Colonnade, serves up a sumptuous buffet breakfast with an incredible choice of Asian, Thai and Western food, ticking more boxes than most hotels, as well as ensuring authenticity in every dish with flavours to match, and that is just breakfast.
The Mediterranean, La Scala, serves lunch and dinner and while dining out in Bangkok is a draw-card, do not miss this while staying in the hotel.
The elegant Celadon Thai restaurant blew us away with its elevated authentic Thai flavours that is beyond our expectations by far, even for the hard to please that craves for a true Thai taste.
The extensive food and beverage continue with Thimian cafe, offering light bites, pastries with tea and coffee throughout the day with a view overlooking at the back courtyard gardens. The ZUK bar offering the usual hotel tipples and then some, the Pool Terrace serving up some tasty poolside summery bites including oven-baked pizza and lastly the Lobby Salons where you can enjoy the tasteful and peaceful ambience while imbibing in your favourite beverage or bites especially in the evening where live Mahori Thai classical music is played for you to chill and unwind.
As always, our stay was too short, but we luxuriated in the expansive surrounds and amenities of this stunning legendary hotel and it still remains our favourite. For all its warmth and charm as well as the hotel grounds surrounds, not to mention the most delightful dining experiences which are the hidden gems, all under one huge complex to ensure you can shut yourself off from the hustle and bustle of Sathorn Road and sequester yourselves in the oasis that is all happening in this one and only The Sukhothai Bangkok.
