LOEWE x Antonio Ballester Moreno @ Mantón de Manila Silk Scarves Collection

Every year Loewe has a crossover with a Spanish artist to design a scarf. This year Loewe has invited the Madrid-based artist Antonio Ballester Moreno to work with them on their new line of silk Mantón de Manila scarves. The Mantón de Manila is a highly embellished shawl associated with the flamenco traditions of southern Spain, and has been a source of inspiration for Loewe’s silk scarves for generations. It is patterned with flowers, birds and other happy symbols. The artist Antonio Ballester, is known for his optimistic, ornate, naive and often child like paintings are executed with big, simple shapes and bold, hot colours. The scarf he has given his own direction on the classic and traditional pattern.
The original Mantón dates back to the 18th century, when silk scarves embroidered with Taoist symbols were imported from China to Seville via Manila, the capital of the Philippines, which was then a Spanish colony. These Chinese shawls were copied and adapted by Spanish craftspeople, their flying dragons transformed into birds and their exotic flowers replaced with local flora such as roses, daisies and irises. Finally a fringed border was added, giving the mantón a dramatic edge when twirled around the shoulders during flamenco dances. As a Spanish artist with a colourful and decorative style, Loewe thought Antonio Ballester Moreno would be the perfect person to design a new line of silk scarves in the decorative Mantón de Manila tradition.
His optimistic, ornate, naive and often child like paintings are executed with big, simple shapes and bold, hot colours. Birds and flowers feature heavily in his work, and these are emblazoned on the two scarves he has designed for Loewe. These will be on sale in Loewe outlets from May 2012. Antonio will also be working on the window displays in Loewe stores for May and June 2012. They will focus on his Mantón de Manila designs and are expected to light up Loewe’s windows with vast areas of vibrant colour.
Another new addition to Loewe’s silk collection is a traditional Mantón de Manila - designed by Loewe’s creative director Stuart Vevers. This will be available by special order only as each mantón will be individually embroidered by hand, using silk thread in the vivid colours of Antonio Ballester Moreno’s scarves. The mantón will go on display in Loewe flagship stores in Europe and Asia from May onwards, giving customers who are thinking of ordering one the chance to see up close just how much skill and time goes into crafting each one.
The new iconic Napa leather Amazona Bag by Antonio Ballester Moreno also comes in two colors, the forest blue and yellow purple. Don't forget to check out the making of video, it is rather delightful and cute.
