Mirrors Of The Heart @ Xiong Yu Solo Exhibition

Chengdu born Artist Xiong Yu's 熊宇latest solo exhibition in Hong Kong entitled "Mirrors of The Heart" captured many visitors' eyes and curiosity during his visit in town recently. Xiong's European classical background animation of the generation influenced and break away from social realism creating an artistic language of his own based on beings from a surreal virtual world. The classical feelings and the continuance of his past work with staged atmospheres breaths life into the plot's visual. Images of angels are still Xiong's theme and he brings the heavenly angels of our imaginations down to earthly existence and live amongst us. Reversing time and space, even though angels have seen the evils of the world, they can still embrace a peaceful grace. We may not be very clear about what angels really look like but painting angels to Xiong is a kind of living; belief in angels is a kind of faith. We spent 6 minutes with him and discovered more of his love and passion towards his work.

M: What are you working on lately?
X: I have been to Taipei, Basel Expo and now in Hong Kong for my solo exhibition.

M: Is there anyone that you would like to work with? Why?
X: Not anyone in particular but he or she has to be smart and can inspire me. Also I would like get to know more and curious about Liuli art creation because of its ever-changing colours that gives me lots of inspiration and space to think of many others areas which are new to me.

M:What was the biggest challenge or downfall you had faced in your past or present career and how did you overcome it?
X: Through my inner voice, it relates to many stories and hints which could translate to other obstacles sometimes. Hence, the metaphor and interpretation could associate with different meanings. Focused light and dark settings let people associate with their inner world, I use my work to convey the experiences and growth of my innermost heart, which makes me consider social communities from a focus on personal emotions. By reading Franz Kafka and Sigmund Freud, I could find a better way out.

M: What were the things that you had done in your career that you think you have not done well enough and there is room for improvements?
X: Too many. Simply because I would never satisfy in many things that I do, perhaps that is just me and I have a lot of messages I would like to deliver through my paintings and each time when I failed, I'll tell myself I would have to do it better in my next project as I believe in practice make perfect.

M: What would be your ultimate goal for your career achievement?
X: I would like to see my art being appreciated in a much more unique ways, being more individual and creating a style of its own. People could look into it with a different eyes. Until then, this is something I would like to achieve.

M: What is your ideal living lifestyle?
X: We are attracted by everything in reality, let's face it. Set your own goals and make it work. I am an idealist and I believe in idealistic things. I am pretty much enjoying 80% of what i am having now.
