Situated along the bustling Lat Krabang Road, and ten minutes away by the hotel complimentary scheduled shuttles to Survarnabhumi Airport, you can be forgiven for thinking that you had arrived in a Phuket resort style hotel, as the main entrance is elevated from the roadside with a curved and spacious driveway before you are being dropped off.
A gigantic stainless steel traditional Thai fishing net sculpture lies spread out on the water feature in the middle of the driveway forecourt that looks particularly striking at night and illuminated the entire facade, which is quite stunning.
The moment when you step into the lobby, you feel as though you have stepped into a resort in the Thai countryside. The lobby itself is very expansive, allowing for a congestion free experience, given the regularity of the hotel airport shuttle bus picking up and dropping off groups of guests at a time.
This urban resort is a pleasant surprise especially for airport hotel category per se. The interior design is a tribute to, and inspired by the traditional Thai rivers, so they have natural materials such as bamboo to create imagery of trees in a forest in the lobby for a more soothing and calming effect.
The lobby ceiling soars and the arrival experience is met with views of the main massive, well look-after landscaping adorned with a 40-metre long swimming pool, which is surrounded on three sides by wings of guest rooms, restaurant, lounge bar as well as popular event function spaces. Aesthetically stunning and you would love to spend time marveling the surroundings by sipping the house signature cocktails at the mezzanine level Lobby Deli.
The Lobby, Lobby Deli, and the all-day-dining Chon Som all look out to the calming and large expanse of lawn and the inviting swimming pool, so this reorients your brain away from the bustling street and city outside to another world, which is a clever design touch. After a long flight, your tired body is immediately soothed by such a relaxing and nature inspired aspect and you really start to chill and forget the travails of air travel!
We arrived around dinner time and didn’t have to wait long for the check-in to be completed and we quickly found our Deluxe Balcony Room on the 6th floor directly overlooking the enchanting courtyard and swimming pool, which was a most welcome view in the evening and upon waking the next day.
This 454 rooms urban resort also features 14 suites, it is easily to recharge in the modern design with local inspiration and stay productive with in-room workspace. Well chosen furniture and carpet adds a modern and contemporary touch to the almost minimalist interior juxtaposed with the black wall mounted hanging bed side lamps, that makes you want to lay on the flat-ironed silky sheets in no time.
The spacious and bright bathroom features a white marble top and an illuminated oval mirror looking through the bedroom to the balcony view with blinds and spotless wall mirror to draw for privacy. Strong shower pressure is another plus together with the use of the eco-friendly Nirvae bath amenities to let your fatigue fade away.
We decided to have dinner at the casual all-day-dining Chon Som, located one floor below the lobby in the hotel restaurant downstairs that can be easily accessed by the grand spiral white marble stairway inspired by the mesmerizing water vortexes found in Thailand's serene canals (which is popular for wedding shots) or the lift from the guest room floors.
As it happened, it was the weekly seafood buffet diner on every Friday and Saturday and this was a pleasant surprise, to say the least.
Once we had surveyed the selection on offer, we endeavoured to enjoy as much variety of seafood as possible, done in many ways a-la-minute to your liking and chef’s signature from the buffet line along with quite a few authentic and traditional Thai dishes, especially the Khao Tang Na Tang (savory rice crackers with shrimps) and the all time favourite dessert - Khao Niao Mamuang - Mango Sticky Rice to end the dinner.
From international grilled premium cuts to assorted cheeses and desserts, nothing seems to disappoint from the presentation to the extensive flavours and the culinary team clearly have not lost focus. Not to mention, when you are “captive” in an airport hotel, you want your guests to have access to great food at affordable prices and this hotel has it in spades. This is simply another elevation.
First thing next morning we did a few laps in the pool before the lavish breakfast ahead and had it all to ourselves. The swimming pool and deck is a simple design with so much room and so much green lawn to make you feel at one with nature and work up an appetite.
This was followed by a superb buffet breakfast in Chon Som again and just like last nights dinner, superb flavours and variety, with a particular nod to traditional Thai dishes that had us going back for more, especially the Khanom Jeen Nam Ya (fish curry sauce with rice vermicelli) - the timeless Southern-Thai breakfast dish with the perfect balance of spicy, savory and slightly sweet flavours for an authentic true Thai taste.
As a bonus feature, this is a 3rd generation recipe of Chef Nut that has been passed on by his beloved grandmother. Another beauty for travelling by discovering the unknown to immerse your palate by exploring the genuine Thai flavours.
The hotel is in a great location that is close to the airport but just far away enough to get you out of that zoo like atmosphere and what Marriott has done for this property is a breath of fresh air when it comes to an airport hotel experience. It is also close to a luxury and premium outlet if you feel the need to shop at the beginning or end of your trip.
But most importantly, if you arrive late in the day, this is ideal for chilling out before you move further downtown for other accommodation options, as the last thing you want to do when on a late flight is waste at least an hour getting through traffic to feel even more frustrated and tired. On the other hand, the last night of your stay in Bangkok is also an aspiration alternative before flying home. Courtyard Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is no doubt the perfect respite to bookend your holiday. Stay elevated!
