While you are in the Sultanate of Oman and relaxing along the Arabic sea and desiring a spa retreat that takes you away from the hustle and bustle of a typical hotel or resort, then the Spa Alila at Hinu Bay has something to further pamper your stay or visit, as this destination spa is secluded and tucked away in the new Alila resort, merely one hour drive northeast along the coastline from Salalah, the tropical city of the southern Dhofa region in Oman.

Spa interior design is always a make or break – it either draws you in with its charming design or you feel there is nothing special to offer. Thoughtful design is important and that first visual is the drawcard for you to decide if it creates the mood and ambience of a peaceful and rejuvenation sanctuary that reflects the brand’s image.

The exterior of the Spa Alila at Hinu Bay is grand, but not exactly in the style of a signature spa, more like a exhibition hall façade with a long water feature and fountain leading up to the entrance. Ivy plants begin to grow and climb atop the entrance of the spa complex with other landscaping readily adding some life and colors. But outside appearances can sometimes hide what lies within and the spa lobby is a marked contrast to what we have experienced at other Alila Spas, as this has some elements that fit perfectly and others which seem at odds with the Alila sensible touch.

The lobby reception and waiting lounge is separated into two spacious sections in a living room style of layout with the local handmade Sacra products on display on a pleasant shelving unit and a large handmade glass chandelier, six penny artworks hanging on each end of the waiting lounges is quite out of “Alila” space when it comes to the resort brand’s unique touches and elements of sophistication. It is quite out of place in our estimation, but the beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.

The main spa lobby has four egress points, which seemed a little busy to us, but that is due to the design whereby you need to exit the lobby into an external corridor to reach your treatment room. As the climate in this region does not get excessively hot or cold it works, but a covered walkway would make more sense to maintain that seamless journey from lobby to treatment room. Privacy comes first!

In this haven of serenity, with a stunning beachfront that radiates sophistication and exclusivity, the touch of luxury offers you an indulgence of luscious lifestyle facilities. As grand as the spa annexe is, they only have seven treatment rooms – four single and three double, so it is all about the luxury of space, with a simple layout of treatment rooms all down one side of the complex. We would recommend that you ask for a guided tour just to give you a sense of everything on offer. The receptionist Rose was very accommodating and wished to show us some treatment rooms and the overall amenities before we booked and our ‘inspection’ allayed any concerns about the experience that lay ahead of us, as the treatment rooms do offer that Alila touch, plus the change rooms have the steam and sauna facilities as well as an outdoor relaxation deck with a plunge pool, all well facilitated.

It is only when you arrive in your treatment room that you begin to feel cocooned in the Alila spa experience. The couple’s room that we were in did not disappoint, given that it seems to be constantly sunny, the treatment room envelops you in dark, warm tones of beige and brown and each room comes with a large bathroom with toilet and shower and changing area, incredibly spacious and luxurious.

Spa Alila always strive to please and indulge you in their unique and customized spa experiences with their own exclusive natural Alila Living spa products to invigorate your senses and wellbeing set in a relaxed contemporary environment. Rose organized a pre-spa experience for us to enjoy the steam room before our treatments began. The air filled with a mist of heady, earthy and cleansing aroma elevated by the use of frankincense and juniper berry oils, which is reminiscent of ancient Oman. It also helps to open our pores and awaken our minds before the treatment began.

Part of the spa journey encompasses using natural products, so presently they are using the Sacra brand, which is made in Oman from natural ingredients that elevates the spa experience beyond the norm; hence their desire to deliver “bespoke locally inspired treatments”. Each product has naturally active ingredients that will nurture your body and deliver a sensory experience that is complimented by the expert spa therapists’ touch. With subtle levels of lighting to soothe the senses after the bright glare from outside, we let our pampering begin with the Alila Hinu Bay Therapeutic Tailored Massage treatment, but with different levels of strength to experience the full gamut of techniques.

These customized treatments took us on a 60-minute journey with the application of Frankincense oil, which has been treasured through the ages for its many beneficial qualities and is a very famous for its healing benefits known to relieve, repair and revive tense and tired muscles and is grown locally in Oman. Each masseuse was able to apply massage techniques with varying degrees of intensity, together with long flowing strokes and Thai stretching and suffice it to say that all particular areas of focus were addressed and we could feel the benefits at the end and the ensuing hours afterwards.This peaceful sanctuary is dedicated to pamper you from head to toe, with the care and attention to detail. It is all about sense, feel and touch, and we were in expert hands and after some moments, you were not aware of anyone else in the room as you were transported to another world and feeling…silence is golden.

We love that Spa Alila talks about making a spa experience fun, as it is all about you and they put us front and centre, with expert consultations, giving us the freedom to personally select the energizing and uplifting natural oils for our treatment and enjoying the pre-treatment rooms at our leisure. Without question, you will be completely cocooned in an other-worldly experience and while nothing lasts forever, Spa Alila’s experience  will certainly leave lasting memories and surprisingly different as ever. This is what Alila means in ancient Sanskrit …and sweet dreams await.
