Marimekko design team drew inspiration from personal growth stories and
created a dialogue between iconic archive prints in the 50’s to 70’s and
contemporary prints developed by younger generation designers for Spring Summer
2018 collection. The rich heritage of Marimekko serves as a seedbed for its
designs of today and to grow further into the future.
Bold prints of the new season are seen in crisp primary colours of yellow, red and blue as well as botanical green. The materials range from silk, poplin to woven cotton and linen, all printed in Marimekko’s in-house printing factory in Helsinki, which is also the innovation hub of the brand’s creatives. The collection fully showcases Marimekko’s art of print making.
Throughout the year 2018 Marimekko will celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of its most beloved stripe patterns, Tasaraita (evenly striped).
Designer Annika Rimala created this new symbol for the era of unisex in 1968, a time of reformist and brave ideas and actions, where passionate battles for equality also extended to fashion. This iconic stripe has been part of Marimekko cotton jersey line ever since, our symbol of equality regardless of gender, age or race; and during 50th anniversary the print grows into woven cotton line for the first time.
