Vivienne Westwood AW2013/14 advertising campaign was inspired by this season’s
Gold Label collection which drew influences from
the 4 corners- historical and ethnic, structure and ‘flou’. The collection
visits medieval Europe via the beautiful illustrations in illuminated
manuscripts and the return of the crusaders that changed England enormously.
They brought back luxuries and ideas not only from Italy but from the Arab
world. The Vivienne Westwood man and woman are crusaders for a better world.
Vivienne Westwood collaborated with American born artist Jack Peirson for the first time to shoot the campaign. Pierson specialises in photography, sculpture, video and drawing. His work often expolores the emotional undercurrents of everyday life, and is well known for referencing traditional American motifs (roadside ephemera, small town stores) and thus a lost era of cultural symbolism; his resulting word sculptures are imbued with both nostalgia and disillusionment. Fueled by the poignancy of emotional experience and by the sensations of memory, obsession and absence, Pierson’s subject throughout his work is ultimately, as he states, ‘hope’.
