The Civil Wars, Nashville Tennessee country folk rock musical duo group of Joy
Williams and John Paul White, which displays some talented vocals. This disc is
rather dark and intense, but delivers some soulful mandolin and guitar
instrumentation to illustrate the lyrics moods. While this may not be
everyone’s ‘cup of tea’, there are some tracks to enjoy. The track <I Had Me A
Girl> has some tortured vocals about being taught to pray, while the <Devil’s Backbone> is one of the less interesting tracks whose
lyrics don’t rise beyond the typical religious storied lyrics of previous bands
in this genre. The duo also does some covers. There is Etta James <Tell Mama> and the Smashing Pumpkins <Disarm> but we shall leave it up to you to decide if
these work or not, as it is quite a personal thing when giving a new take on
previous singers’ material and completely change the original classic in the
opposite direction, such as the Etta James number. Joy William’s vocals on <Oh
Henry> are particularly well rendered. Worth exploring for those out there that
appreciates folk rock!
