What do the grandson of
aviation pioneer Claude Dornier and Chronoswiss CEO Oliver Ebstein have in
common? A shared love of aviation, that’s what. And between the complicated
world of airplane design and the fascinating technology of watchmaking there
are numerous parallels. When Iren Dornier and Oliver Ebstein met, the idea for
a cooperation was born. To kick it off, Chronoswiss is sponsoring Dornier’s
World Tour project, which culminates in the collaboration of a Chronoswiss
watch based on the Timemaster Chronograph GMT inspired by Dornier that will
accompany the adventurer on his trip around the world.
Already in 2006, Iren
Dornier had an unusual flight project that resulted in headlines. Back then he
travelled around the world in a faithfully reproduced, fully restored DO 24
following in the footsteps of the Do X, his grandfather’s flying boat. In 2013
the pilot is back at it: on board his self-designed amphibian aircraft S-RAY
007, which was inspired by the legendary Dragonfly
by Dornier, he will fly around the world, landing in unusual places on all six
continents. Lakes, rivers, oceans…everywhere there is (enough) water to do so. The
tour will start in the Philippines ,
where the headquarters of Iren Dornier’s company is located.
The 54-year-old Dornier explains that he would like to be a medium for
inspiring, touching stories all over the world. In the Philippines ,
for example, his chief topic will concern education. Matching the focal point
of each stage of the trip, he will invite celebrity passengers and completely
normal people to accompany him and to exchange with the pilot regarding themes
from his or her country. On his mission, Dornier will be accompanied by a
camera team so that it is possible to follow his experiences and those of his
passengers on the tour via social media and a specially developed project
website.
