KATIE GRAND LOVES HOGAN. Love magazine Editor in chief and stylist Katie Grand created a SS2013 capsule collection called GANG ~ comprises three styles of trainers (a high-top, a low and a wedge), a ballerina, leather purses in two sizes and oval sunglasses. The Olympia, the Attractive and the H194 are existing Hogan styles that Grand selected from the archive, which she redesigned in new combinations of calfskin and suede. ‘A lot of people seem to think that the wedge trainer is a new idea’ says Grand ‘but the Attractive has been in the Hogan archive for years’.
The purses – compact and rectangular, with a strap that allows them to be carried on the wrist or across the body – are also an original creation. ‘They might be brightly colored and decorated with hearts, but they’re extremely practical’ says Grand. ‘I always carry a BlackBerry and iPhone wherever I go, so designed them to be just big enough to carry hold both, along with a key and credit card’. The colours featured in the collection are boldly graphic: white, black, pink and deep- bright shades of yellow, green and blue – often deployed in contrasting combinations. The leather hearts that emblazon the styles, meanwhile, are a visual reference to Love, Grand’s biannual magazine. ‘I have a relationship with Hogan and Andrea Della Valle that goes back many years’ says Grand ‘I worked with them for three seasons, so I understand the product. I was keen to bring a fresh sense of femininity, which is why I’ve used so much of that intense shade of pink that has always been a favourite of mine: it’s feminine in a way that’s lively and fiery rather than demure.’
