Classique is the first fragrance by Jean Paul Gaultier in 2013 and celebrating its 20th anniversary. A
look back on a social phenomenon which,
to celebrate its two decades in style, is slipping into limited edition and unique Haute Couture finery “Gaultier-style” seduction 20 years of triumphant seduction. JPG has
expressed and continues to express his vision of femininity and feminine
seduction. His
own vision is unique, singular, powerful; a true echo of the way society is
evolving. He tirelessly studies the evolution from his fly-on-the-wall
perspective, interpreting, diverting and “twisting” it with humour and talent. Showcases
and enhances women, drawing on classic and universal icons of feminine
seduction, that
he uses to his advantage, and creates upheaval, with the mischievous and
licentious angle.
JPG imagine a woman in a fragrance when he created Classique. The
perfume made its first appearance in 1993 in a body-shaped bottle with full curves
strapped into a metal corset and was designed in the boudoir scent tradition. Its intoxicating trail is
embodied by rose, orange blossom, vanilla and amber wood. The Classique woman appears as a triumphant amazon who asserts her power
of seduction as well as her uninhibited femininity. This was a vision of true
genius by the designer, as the 1990s were defined by androgyny and gender
confusion. JPG transcended these codes, exploiting them later in all
his advertising visuals, full of contrasts: the sketched out lines for the
reconciliation to come in the next decade. As the antithesis of feminine
depictions in traditional perfumery, the Classique woman is sensual to the
extreme, and deliberately sexual in her provocations.
