Phillip Lim 2013 pre Spring collection is built around the concept of ‘FLOU – TILITY’ a portmanteau word derived from the word ‘flou’ (from French meaning fluid and loose) and utility. The collection plays with the concept of contrasting these two meanings to produce a very feminine yet practical collection.
The utility is shown in the structure and in the detailing while the fluidity is shown in the curves and feminine expression, which are for the most part drawn from floral inspiration.
Utility details such as exaggerated pockets, belts and stitch details have been reworked and
incorporated into the garments. These details contribute a more structured character to the
collection. The abstract flower prints used throughout the collection work to soften this utility and
add an element of playfulness. Both the prints of the collection are heavily inspired by nature.
While the colors are also nature inspired, the 70’s utilitarian drabness and Tupperware inspiration help to create a natural and playful personality that is rich and contrasting.
