The Opposite House in Beijing showcasing an exhibit by artist Liu Qinghe entitled 《漂》Piao (Floating) presented by Red Gate Gallery where Liu refashions his landmark installation Suzhou Time Waves in the Atrium of The Opposite House. The sculptural scene depicts a pond life landscape contrasting the contemporary state of China with the simple and idealistic pleasures of life in the country-side where friends idly gather around a swimming lake. Liu’s work is a commentary reflecting on the urbanisation of China, the pulsing practical problems caused by urbanisation and the intangible loss of traditions, routines and customs. He views today’s new tradition as one of anxiety – a lack of clarity in the urban cityscape that changes so rapidly that even the newest generation cannot keep up.
Tianjin born, Liu Qinghe graduated from Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts with a concentration in ink painting. Liu has exhibited extensively in China for over 30 years and is considered to be one of the leading advocates of contemporary Chinese ink painting. He employs his traditional and formidable skills in the most masterful way to comment on contemporary Chinese society in a way which allows viewers to easily access his commentary between art and culture. "It’s very exciting to have Liu exhibit here at The Opposite House and to see his 2D work transform into a 3D story, reminding us all of simpler days," says General Manager, Anthony Ross. Exhibits ends 30 September 2012 in the Atrium of The Opposite House.
