As South America continues to soar in popularity with business and leisure travellers, Chile-based LAN Airlines is embarking on the biggest growth programme in its history. LAN and the Brazilian airline TAM are finalising plans to merge, creating the new LATAM airline partnership, which will be the largest in South America and one of the biggest in the world.
Flying to South America is no longer just a dream, especially from Asia. For the holiday of the life stime, the LATAM Group serve a global network which includes some 160 locations in South America – or double the number of South American destinations now served by LAN. As it moves towards formal commencement of this new partnership LAN continues to grow in its own right with new flights, new routes, new aircraft and even a new airline, LAN Colombia.
Within South America, the LAN group recently increased its network of destinations from almost 60 to over 80 in 10 countries with the launch of LAN Colombia, the newest member of the LAN family after LAN Airlines (formerly LAN Chile), LAN Argentina, LAN Peru, LAN Ecuador and LAN Express. In addition to its Santiago base, the LAN group operates other major hubs in Lima, Peru and Buenos Aires, Argentina, providing onward connections to a wide range of destinations. The LAN Group recently commenced services on a number of new routes, including between mainland Ecuador and San Cristobal, the airline’s second destination in the Galapagos Islands, and from Lima to both the Chilean external territory of Easter Island and Havana, the capital of Cuba. LAN’s growing network also provides additional options for travellers to link multiple destinations into “circuit holidays” – for example Santiago-Buenos Aires – Iguassu Falls – Lima – Santiago, or Santiago-Easter Island – Lima – Santiago.
These journeys, and others, can be created using the LAN South America Airpass, enabling travellers to create their own itineraries. Such visits also enable travellers to visit the continent multiple times and explore different destinations. LAN become the first airline in South America, and one of the first in the world, to introduce the new, long haul Boeing 787 “Dreamliner”, for which it has announced orders and options for up to 32 aircraft. From Asia, LAN offers a range of connections to South America, flying via Australia, New Zealand and the US West Coast in conjunction with partner airlines. Details, visit www.lan.com
