There are some many uplifting movies based on true stories often feel so untrue and fall so flat, <Machine Gun Preacher> is no exception. The movie is too shapeless and emotionally vacant to bring his story to life. Sam Childers (Gerard Butler) an ex biker-gang member makes the life-changing decision to go to East Africa to help repair homes destroyed by civil war and outraged by the unspeakable horrors faced by the region's vulnerable populace, especially the children. Determined to save as many as possible, he leads armed missions deep into enemy territory to retrieve kidnapped children, restoring peace to their lives-and eventually his own. It is complex yet the hero's "true story" confuse and unsatisfying which muddles the movie. Director Marc Forster may have lines up this hero in his sights but not quite convince the audience but himself.
